Abu Dhabi 23rd of January 2013 : Ghantoot Polo are tonight (Wednesday) within clutching distance of their second title of the season as they head into a clash with local rivals, Abu Dhabi Polo in the final of the Emirates Open Polo Championship, presented by Supporting Sponsor, Aigner Watches & Jewellery.
Ghantoot Polo, winners of the Golden Polo Cup earlier this season, sealed a place in Friday’s Grand Final of their home competition, held at Ghantoot Racing & Polo Club all this week, after triumphing over Saif Polo Team10-5.
All of Ghantoot Polo’s players made it onto the score sheet with Emirati ace, Ali Al Marri and Pelayo Berazadi claiming two while Juan Zubiaurre Canal and Facundo Sola scored three each.
Saif Polo started the game with a goal in hand due to handicap difference but had no answer to Ghantoot Polo’s superior firepower, scoring just the four goals courtesy of Ahmed Al Ghurair and Maxi Malacalza who both got one each and Hugo Barabucci who scored twice.
“We are very happy with that match,” said Al Marri of Ghantoot Polo. “We put together another strong team performance and have really improved as a cohesive unit as the tournament has progressed.
“Now our focus is to maintain this forward momentum and approach the final like it was any other match. We know Abu Dhabi are a skillful and tough team and we expect to have to play out of our skins if we are to seal the win.
“It does add an extra level of competition to play our neighbours, but we want to win this title no matter who our opposition is and no doubt Abu Dhabi feel exactly the same.”
In the second match of the evening Abu Dhabi engineered a convincing 7-3 victory over Bin Drai Polo with Juan Jose Stroni proving the standout player thanks to his five goals. Abu Dhabi’s other two goals came courtesy of Manuel Elizalde.
Bin Drai Polo saw their goals come from Juan Jose Brane, who scored two and Ignacio Lthurburu who claimed one.
Bin Drai Polo will now take on Saif Polo in the Sub Final, which will be staged before the Grand Final on Friday January 25 at 3pm. The Grand Final will get underway at 5pm.
All matches, which are held in partnership with Abu Dhabi Sports Council, are free to enter and entertainment and a prize draw will be laid on for members of the public who attend.
